Frequently Asked Questions
What is art therapy?
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that integrates creative expression with traditional talk therapy. A licensed art therapist helps clients use art materials such as drawing, painting, or other creative processes to explore emotions, process life experiences, and gain insight. Art therapy can be especially helpful when emotions or experiences feel difficult to express through words alone.
Do I need to be artistic to benefit from art therapy?
No artistic experience or skill is required to benefit from art therapy. The focus of art therapy is not on creating “good” artwork but on using the creative process as a tool for emotional expression, reflection, and healing. Many people who initially feel unsure about art therapy discover that creativity can open new ways of understanding themselves.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help people process traumatic or distressing experiences. EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming or emotionally intense. EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD, trauma, anxiety, and other distressing life experiences.
What issues can therapy help with?
Therapy can help individuals navigate a wide range of emotional and life challenges, including:
Life transitions and identity changes
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and stress
Relationship challenges
Self-esteem and personal growth
Postpartum adjustment and new motherhood
Emotional overwhelm or feeling “stuck”
Therapy provides a supportive space to explore these experiences and develop healthier coping strategies.
Do you work with LGBTQIA+ clients?
Yes. I provide LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy and strive to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals exploring identity, relationships, and life transitions. Therapy can be a space where clients feel respected, understood, and supported in their unique experiences.
Who do you work with?
I work with adults, teens, and young adults, as well as individuals navigating major life transitions. My practice also supports new mothers adjusting to postpartum changes and individuals processing trauma or difficult emotional experiences.
What happens in an art therapy session?
In an art therapy session, clients may use art materials such as drawing, painting, collage, or other creative forms of expression. Sometimes sessions involve art-making, while other times they may focus more on conversation and reflection. The process is guided by your needs and comfort level.
